"I want to connect with the landscape when I paint"

Saul paintingI try to keep a balance between representational line and instinctual marks, allowing the piece to change and evolve freely. My paintings are as much about how I am feeling as what my eyes are seeing.

All of my work is made in situ. I paint on board, canvas and watercolour paper. By using acrylics, pastels and watercolours and not thinking too much, I hope to retain the looseness and freshness of a quick sketch.

North Cornwall’s coast line fascinates me. I feel like I’m looking right down the county’s fringe, its rugged skin! To me, it’s a place where everything happens and the elements play.

The power and energy created by the coast and the weather is special.

It makes me feel alive and when I paint I feel a part of it!
